What is Shockwave Therapy?Shockwave therapy is a non invasive treatment which uses compressed air to drive a projectile inside a hand piece to a shock transmitter. The kinetic energy generating from the motion and weight of the projectile is converted into acoustic energy when the projectile hits the shock transmitter. The acoustic pulses then transmit into the underlying tissue, treating a larger area such as an achilles tendon or plantar fascia.
What are the benefits of Shockwave Therapy?– New blood vessel formation which increases oxygen content and stimulates the healing process.– Reversal of chronic inflammation– stimulation of collagen production– Reduction of pain
What conditions can Shockwave Therapy be used for?Shockwave Therapy works most effectively on chronic conditions such as plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, trigger points, tight calves, hamstrings, hip flexors, quadriceps and glutes. It is also used successfully on iliotibial band syndrome. Pathologies that typically haven't responded well with more conservative therapies, are receptive to shockwave therapy. How many treatments will I need? Treatments range between 3-5 sessions, one session per week in combination with prescribed self management stretches.
What should I expect? The podiatrist will generally have you reclined in the patient chair or lying flat on your stomach. Ultrasound gel will then be applied to the area of treatment and the probe will then be applied to the point of pain and surrounding muscles and glide over slowly. Expect the treatment to be noisy due to the projectile hitting the transmitter.
Is shockwave therapy painful?Individual results may vary but most patients report only mild tenderness in some areas, to no pain at all. Directly after the treatment there is no pain at the site of treatment. Usually there is some tenderness felt the day after the treatment but this eases after the second treatment.
